A next-generation IndyCar unveiled Wednesday stresses safety, efficiency and cost-consciousness, experts said.

The new IndyCar Series vehicle, dubbed the "IndyCar Safety Cell," was revealed to owners, drivers and journalists in Indianapolis, and was found to be lighter and less expensive than current vehicles, Motorsports.com reported.

The Web site said the new design, the work of a committee of IndyCar Series experts, is meant to improve safety and efficiency. The car's total weight was pegged at no more than 1400 pounds -- nearly 200 pounds lighter than the current Dallara IndyCar.

Officials said the cars cost about $350,000 -- without the engines -- and can be modified with relatively inexpensive add-on aero kits.

Motorsports.com said Dallara holds the contract to produce the new vehicle through 2015, with a racing debut possible as soon as March 2012.
